What is Offal?

We are often quizzed by pet parents about these unique ingredients. What is it and what are the befits? If you’re a gen X (or Y) or Millennial, then these items might be foreign to you. Won’t see them on the shelves at your favourite retailer either. Our desire for consumerism, packaging and presentation has alienated and orphaned these nutritional gems to dark little corners in old rusty shacks.

Alongside these words, we often find claims of 100% "complete and balanced" that leave us to assume we are providing the best food for our dogs and cats;- feeding the same dry cereal based diets day in and day out. Don’t be Label Fooled

A new trend in kibble is "natural", or "real" or "fresh" ingredients. Kibble is still kibble, and still based on a dry matter base. In keeping with labelling requirements, these ingredients are listed by weight, but "real" chicken contains water! And when it becomes dry, it no longer represent the "chicken" in the feed, as the rest of the non-animal proteins are now the primary ingredients. We discuss this trend in greater details.

Evolutionary Nutrition through Biologically Specie Appropriate Raw Food

The topic of nutrition transcended from health conscience parents to pets over the last couple of decades, to a point where today we have a brewing “David and Goliath” story in the making. No less due to social pressures, career orientated couples, empty nesters and increased demand on home security, many more pet parents are starting to evaluate their pets’ nutritional needs with similar consideration as their own. Combine these ever-increasing demands on pet care with ever increasing veterinary fees and escalating costs of companion animal care, pet parents and guardians are actively looking toward international trends for guidance. These trends have resulted in the growth of the biologically specie appropriate raw pet food market, an area of business that we as Raw Food for Pets (Pty) Ltd specialise in.
